Joe Mendick

I’m a composer and sound recordist. The sound is smooth, blue, and cavernous. In it you might hear the moon, a calm body of water, and an electric irreverence for genre.

I have a BFA from Carnegie Mellon in Music Technology and Drama. That’s where I learned to record and mix for real, and where I started making tracks that refused to pick a lane. From 2010 on, the YouTube channel is the messy archive of that.

People usually find me through Kyle Selig. We wrote and produced And the Tree Was Happy (2013) for a dance piece at the Playground festival, based on The Giving Tree. The music got picked up by Jon Jorgenson’s Anima Series. In 2016 we did it again: She Breathes, composed for a dance theatre piece at the Brick Theatre. I recorded and mixed. Kyle wrote lyrics and sang lead.

I’ve also written and mixed for other rooms: The Somebodies of Nobodies with Zanny Laird, openers for Pittsburgh’s Dancer’s Symposium, music for Stefan Dezil’s Static Shock Blackout trailer, kids’ musicals at Island Theater Workshop, Kragtar with Kyle Wilson. On my own: In the Summer (2018) and All I Want to Give (2020).

Now I make Finding Out every Saturday. About ten minutes. I try to do something I might not pull off, and I show the making. Suno and SoundCloud are the playground when I want a pile of songs that aren’t the catalog.
